Oregon Coast Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List)

Old Mill RV Park & Event Center • Garibaldi, OR • September 9-16, 2021

This Hangout is currently sold out, but join the waiting list and we’ll let you know if a spot opens up!

Experience the drama and grandeur of Oregon's North Coast

Oregon’s North Coast is full of beautiful views, long sandy beaches and scenic hiking trails. The cozy fishing village of Garibaldi is home to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad and a bustling harbor for fishing, crabbing and boating. The nearby town of Tillamook, located at the confluence of the Tillamook, Trask, and Wilson Rivers, is a kayaker’s paradise, as well as the gateway to the Three Cape Scenic Loop and the home of the century-old Tillamook Creamery. You’ll experience these places and more during the seven-day Oregon Coast Hangout.

You’ll enjoy a team-based scavenger hunt through the town of Tillamook, followed by lunch together at the Pelican Brewing Company, where you’ll get to sample some of the craft beers for which Oregon is famous. In the afternoon, you’ll learn about Tillamook’s rich aviation history with a visit to the Tillamook Air Museum. And of course, no visit to the area would be complete without a tour and ice cream and cheese tasting at the world-famous Tillamook Creamery.

You’ll spend a day exploring Cape Meares, a headland of stunning vertical sea cliffs jutting into the Pacific Ocean. This area is home to one of the very last stands of native Oregon old-growth coastal spruce and hemlock forests. Here, you’ll find the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint and its Cape Meares Lighthouse. You’ll have a choice of two easy to moderate hikes in the lush green haven of the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge: the Cape Meares Viewpoint and Octopus Tree Loop (3 mile, 662 ft elevation gain) or the Cape Meares Beach Trail (1.5 miles, 436 ft elevation gain).

Oregon Coastal Scenic Railroad

You’ll view the Oregon Coast from the unique perspective of an interpreted historic steam train ride between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach. Operated by the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, a unique heritage railroading museum, the 1.5 hour round-trip tells the story of the area, gives information about the native wildlife, and stresses the importance of practicing environmental conservation. After returning to Garibaldi, you’ll tour the Garibaldi Maritime Museum, which showcases the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest.

And speaking of unique perspectives, how about the soaring view from the summit of 1,680′ high Neahkahnie Mountain? You can hike the moderate Neahkahnie Mountain Trail (2.7 miles, 905 ft elevation gain) to see it for yourself. Or for some different but no less stunning coastal views, try the Elk Flats Trail (up to 2.9 miles, 616 ft elevation gain). Whichever you choose, refresh yourself afterward with a visit and tasting at the Nehalem Bay Winery.

Netarts Bay

You’ll also visit Netarts Bay, a 7-mile-long body of water surrounded by a coastal rainforest on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. In addition to an optional kayaking trip on the bay (see Optional activity below), you’ll get to take part in an educational program and environmental stewardship volunteer project with the Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed, Estuary, Beach and Sea (WEBS).

Optional activity

Guided kayaking trip on Netarts Bay ($65/person)

Oregon Coast Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 3Come paddle on one of Oregon’s most pristine bays. Still relatively untouched by industry, Netarts Bay offers healthy colonies of harbor seals which are almost always present, along with sea birds and other forms of marine life. This tour will be led by professionally trained and certified guides who creatively combine local culture, history, knowledge of area wildlife, and technical know-how for an unforgettable paddling experience!

While no previous kayaking experience is required, participants should have at least an average level of fitness, as strong wind and tidal conditions are common here. You can paddle a solo kayak or share a tandem with someone else.

The cost for this optional activity is $65 per person and includes rental of all needed equipment. Because of the high summertime demand for these trips, you must sign up and pay for this activity when you register for the Hangout so that we can be sure to reserve enough space for the group.

Hangout location

Oregon Coast Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 4Our base camp for the Oregon Coast Hangout will be the Old Mill RV Park & Event Center in Garabaldi, a 40-acre full-service campground with scenic mountain views on the shores of Tillamook Bay.

All RV parking for the Hangout will be back-in sites with full hookups and 30 amp electrical service. The park also has restrooms with showers, a laundry facility, a fenced dog run, and a dump station. Pets (other than pit bulls, Doberman pinschers and Rottweilers, or mixes containing any of these breeds) are welcome. Well-behaved dogs may be left unattended in your RV as long as they don’t disturb others when you are out of the park. Pets must be on a leash when outside your RV.

You may arrive before the Hangout starts and/or stay after it ends, subject to campground availability, at the park’s regular daily rates. To make a reservation for early arrival or late departure, call the Old Mill RV Park office at 503-322-0322 and mention you’re with the Escapees group.

Is this event right for me?

Oregon Coast Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 5Everyone is welcome at all Escapees RV Club events. With that said, the Oregon Coast Hangout is best suited for members who:

  • enjoy moderately challenging hikes on uneven terrain
  • can participate in activities during weekdays (traditional working/business hours)

For events designed specifically for working-age RVers, with most activities in the evenings and on weekends, try an Xscapers Convergence. Or for more of an all-inclusive, guided-tour experience, you may prefer one of our Head-Out Programs (HOPs).

COVID-19 precautions (updated August 18, 2021)

Because the safety of our members and staff is our number one priority, proof of either full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will be required to attend this event.

Escapees recommends that members be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before attending any club event. (“Fully vaccinated” means that at least two weeks have passed since receiving the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson or Astra-Zeneca vaccines). Participants who are not fully vaccinated must obtain a COVID-19 test not more than 72 hours (three days) before entering this event.

    • At event check-in, you will be asked to present either a valid CDC vaccination card showing that you are fully vaccinated OR the written results of a negative COVID-19 test performed within the past 72 hours.
    • If you don’t have a test, have lost your vaccination card, or are outside of the 72-hour window, locations of the nearest testing facilities will be provided to you. You will be required to self-isolate until a negative test can be provided.
    • Participants who test positive are not allowed to remain on site, and will receive a full refund of their registration fee.
Situations in which you may not attend this event

You may not attend this event if any of the following are true for you or anyone in your party, unless you have met CDC criteria for discontinuing self-isolation:

    • Within 14 days before attending the event you have tested positive, or been exposed to someone who has tested positive, for COVID-19, or
    • Within 48 hours before attending the event, you have experienced symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g., a fever of 100 or higher, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking muscle pain/achiness, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, nasal congestion, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, or any other symptoms associated with COVID-19 identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), whether or not you are vaccinated, unless you have obtained a negative COVID-19 test since the onset of your symptoms and within 72 hours before entering this event.
FAQs about the vaccine/testing requirement

While PCR tests are preferred because they are the most accurate, antigen tests (also referred to as rapid tests) will be accepted.

Yes, children who are not fully vaccinated will need a negative COVID-19 test result to attend.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you can get tested at any facility that offers COVID-19 testing. The websites of most state or county public health departments can help you find testing locations. Many retail pharmacies also offer testing. Your event hosts will have a list of testing locations in the area of the event.

If you test positive for COVID-19 before the event, you are unfortunately no longer eligible to attend. To receive a full refund of your registration fee, email a copy of your positive test result to us at hangouts@escapees.com.

If you test positive for COVID-19 during the event, you may not remain on-site at the event.

If you’ve had COVID-19 within 14 days before attending the event (meaning you are still within the 14-day isolation window), you are unfortunately not eligible to attend. To receive a full refund of your registration fee, email a dated copy of your positive test result to us at hangouts@escapees.com.

If you’ve lost your CDC vaccine card, you will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours before arriving at the event.

Masks recommended indoors

In accordance with current guidance from the CDC, Escapees strongly recommends that all attendees, vaccinated or not, wear a mask when participating in activities or socializing with other participants indoors. Attendees are also expected to comply with all masking requirements issued by any governmental entity or private business.

Other precautions

The COVID-19 health and safety precautions that will be in effect during the Hangout will depend on the state of the pandemic, local and state health regulations, and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and other medical professionals at the time. These precautions may include measures such as requiring wearing of masks in certain situations, requiring social distancing, avoiding indoor group activities, limiting carpooling, and/or limiting activities that include sharing of food. In addition to the above, you may be required to agree in writing that you will help provide a safe environment for everyone by complying with our health and safety rules, and to release Escapees from liability should you become ill during or after the event.

Please also be aware that the availability and content of some planned activities may change depending on local and state health regulations and the business’ own COVID-19 mitigation policies.
